I was a visiting professor at the Rhode Island School of Design in the fall of 2023.
I was one of 8 New York film students selected by the Tribeca Film Institute to participate in a two week master class with Abbas Kiarostami and Martin Scorsese in Marrakech, Morocco. And yes that is the excellent American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani translating.︎︎︎
Thanks to the Danish Film Institute, we made two trips to Greenland, one in the winter and one in the summer to film Lasse Lau’s the Raven and the Seagull. It was a tremendous experience making this film which explores the complicated post-colonial relationship between Denmark and Greenland.︎︎︎
My first foray into feature filmmaking was Tim Sutton’s patient fiction-hybrid, Pavilion. It was a fascinating experience to discover a cinematic language which fit our resources and film sensibility.︎︎︎
Jane Jacobs is still a force of clear sighted integrity. Without credentials she spoke on questions of public space and architecture and was dismissed for her audacity. With Death and Life of Great American Cities she demonstrated the need for urban
planners to take the human scale into better consideration. She observed and clearly described, the shared benefits enjoyed by neighborhoods which grow in step with ever changing human desires and creativity.︎︎︎
The Swell Season, which I co-directed with Nick August-Perna and Carlo Mirabella-Davis, premiered at Tribeca and was selected as the opening night film at Silverdocs.︎︎︎
Weak Signal, a short film that I wrote and directed in Marrakech, premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival.︎︎︎
